Antiscalant are an effective liquid chemical that are added in the reverse osmosis membrane system and other filtration systems that acts a scale inhibitor on the membrane surface. These antiscalants effectively work against scale formation such as silica, calcium carbonate, barium sulphate, calcium fluoride, strontium sulphate, iron oxide and metal oxides. These are added in the feed water through a dosing pump at an appropriate dosing rate.
Antiscalant interferes the precipitation reactions on the surface of RO Membrane in three main ways :
- Threshold inhibition: Antiscalant's ability to keeps salt in supersaturated form in the water.
- Crystal modification: Inherent property of an antiscalants to distorts the shape of salt crystals which resulting in soft and non adherent scale.
- Dispersion: Ability of some antiscalants which does not allow ions to form crystals to be deposited on the surface of membrane.
